Grow Your Company’s Marketing Reach: Now Is The Time

The Wall Street Journal recently did an interview with Stefan Tornquist of Marketing Sherpa about how companies should handle their marketing in this uncertain economy, particularly entrepreneurs and small business owners. He says that, instead of cutting their marketing budget, small businesses should take advantage of the economic lull and use this time to revamp their campaigns, as well as focusing on internet marketing - particularly search engine optimization.

As a web design company, we are always happy to see the mainstream media mention the power of the internet when it comes to marketing and branding.

Tornquist says:

“Many small companies direly need to improve on [marketing using search engines]. What we see with small organizations is a lot of them have gotten into search marketing, but many of their programs are quite limited. They’re maybe just bidding [to place highly in paid search-engine results for the company name], but they have yet to do the work to figure out what the highly converting search terms [those that lead to sales] are. When you look at organic search [the unpaid results that appear when someone types a phrase into a search engine] and poke around in different industries, you find out that smaller companies do not show up when they should.”

Of course, you want your business to show up at the top of the search engine results when people are looking for what you offer, especially if you are tied to a particular location.

“Another tremendous and growing opportunity is local-search marketing [results that appear where people search for local businesses]. The beauty of local search is it gives small companies the chance to show up at the top of search results when people type in their locality that they’d never get to nationally in organic search results.”
