Creating the User Experience: Your Company Website isn’t About You

Posted on June 23rd, 2008

You may think your company’s website is all about your business, but you are incorrect - your website is all about customer service and the needs of your past, present, and future customers (or at least it should be).

Our Chicago web design company understands that the most important aspect of good web design is usability. Recognize the demands of your visitors first and foremost, because if your site is too difficult to navigate, takes a long time to load, or is otherwise not user-friendly, your visitors aren’t going to stick around.

Two common usability issues for business websites are navigation and browser loading times. The problem with the latter is obvious - if a site takes too long to load or crashes their browsers, your visitors (and potential customers) are going to close the window or click away before they even view your website. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how much work, money, and effort you put into designing your site - if it doesn’t load quickly and easily most visitors won’t even see it.

Second, simple navigation is absolutely essential for a good user experience. Don’t make it difficult for visitors to find what they came for, whether it is information about your business, a place to purchase your products, or just a way to get in touch. An overly complicated design can actually be a negative here, as a site is definitely not usable if visitors can’t navigate it, so don’t get so focused on the creative elements that you neglect usability.

In the end, it is important to remember that customer service matters just as much online as it does offline or in person, so build your website with your clients’ needs in mind.
