Color in Web Design: The Importance of Color Schemes

Posted on June 30th, 2008

Selecting the colors for your company’s logo and website can seem like a simple task - just pick something you like and that doesn’t clash and you are home free.  However, your color scheme can influence how visitors perceive your company and your site’s overall usability, so therefore you should consider it is something you should consider carefully.  Our web design company recognizes the powerful impact that different colors can have on a design and your brand.

Furthermore, we know that certain color schemes work with certain industries - for instance, you wouldn’t use a baby pink and blue palette for a real estate company or a construction firm, however, those same colors would be perfect for a children’s clothing ecommerce site.  While that is an obvious example, it is important to consider a business’s market and target audience when selecting colors.

Usability also affects color choice - too many contrasting or bright colors can make a site difficult to read and navigate, or even downright headache-inducing.  Less obviously, certain font colors and styles are easier to work with than others; light text on a dark background, for instance, can be difficult for many people to read (especially on a computer screen).

Last but not least, the various colors on your site should harmonize - even if they are on different pages or sections.  Your business website should be a cohesive representation of your brand, after all, not a bunch of disparate elements.
