Our web design company believes that when it comes to web design, especially business websites, less is almost always more. After all, a simple and clean website that is easy to navigate is key for converting visitors into customers (getting those visitors there in the first place is a job for our SEO team). Besides, the purpose of your website is represent your brand online, and generate growth and new customers/clients for your business, so you want an elegant, usable design that reflects positively upon your company. Here is some advice from two sources that couldn’t be more different: Coco Chanel and American Gangster.
Famed French fashion designer Coco Chanel once advised women to look in the mirror before leaving their house and remove one accessory; she felt that less was more and there was elegance in simplicity. Her tips can be applied to web design - when you are looking at your website, look at all the elements and determine if they are necessary. Can any categories be combined or subtracted? Essentially, you need to ask yourself this question “does my website have any superfluous accessories that I can remove?”
The other source of advice is from the 2007 film American Gangster. The main character, Frank Lucas, remarks that his younger brother’s flashy suit is a “clown suit” and that “the loudest one in the room is the weakest one in the room”. This principle can be applied to web design as well - the websites that are busy and cluttered with advertising, flash animation, and other distracting elements that all compete for user attention are the clown suits. On the other hand, websites that are simple and elegant (like a classic tailored suit) manage to communicate a message of trust and authority in a much more subtle way.
Who would ever have that Frank Lucas, a.k.a. The American Gangster and Coco Chanel would ever be in agreement on anything? Obviously, there is indeed elegance in simplicity and that should extend to your website design.
