Ad agencies are a dime a dozen, and their costs range from fairly affordable for small business owners all the way to the stratosphere for agencies that cater to worldwide brands like Nike and Coca-Cola. There is probably a similar number of web designers and web design firms around, with a similar range of price points (although hiring a web design company probably has a lower barrier to entry).
However, with the increasing ubiquity of the web and the mobile, traditional advertising avenues are becoming less necessary, as it is easier and cheaper for businesses to reach their desired markets via the web. A high quality website that reflects a company’s brand and marketing message and is optimized for search engine traffic (as well as marketed online through blogging and social media) can be more effective than a multi-thousand dollar ad spend.
Furthermore, although advertising and marketing online does bear some similarity to more traditional venues, there are some key differences that a web design agency (particularly one with SEO and SEM specialists on staff) can understand, utilize, and even take advantage of, such as blogging and social networking and bookmarking.
