Flash, Search Engine Optimization, and Small Business Web Design

Our web design company’s SEO division has written about how Flash affects search engine optimization before, however, that topic has yet to be discussed on our web design blog.  For the uninitiated, Flash is multimedia software developed by Adobe and used to create animation and interactive or rich media elements, or even entire websites.

However, Flash is the bane of many SEO agency’s existence, because it cannot be crawled by the search engines - so therefore it cannot be indexed and appear in the SERPs.  Despite the fact that this may be changing because Adobe, Google, and Yahoo are working together to make Flash crawlable, the vast majority of content in Flash is invisible to the search engines.  Therefore, it is unwise to use a lot of Flash for any website that you want to rank highly in the search results (so any business website).

Moreover, not only is Flash difficult for search engines to crawl, they are often slow to load, and not everyone has the right plug-in their browser in order to view it, and Flash can’t be viewed through mobile devices - making it hardly ideal for a business site.
